Mild-mannered Watcher - Adam Pierson
I was born in 1592 in the Highlands of Scotland... Sorry, wrong bio. I was born September 5, 1962 in Ruthin, Wales, UK. I earned my undergraduate degree at St. Aidan's College (Durham University) and attended the University of Paris - Sorbonne as a PhD candidate doing classical studies. I speak English, French, German, Russian, Swahili, Lithuanian, Modern Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and Hopi. I also speak Ancient Egyptian, Hyksos, a bit of Minoan, Ancient Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Coptic and Farsi, but I'm quite rusty. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is these days to find native speakers of these languages. I know the hieroglyphic, Hyksos, cuniform, Phoenician and Ancient Greek writing systems. I am learning Japanese, which should be quite humorous when dealing with Miyoko.
Before I came to Los Angeles, I worked as a researcher for the Western Europe bureau of the Watchers, a secret society of men and women who observe and record the lives of Immortals, but never interfere — well, hardly ever. I graduated from the Watcher Academy 6th in my class (out of 103) in 1984 and was eventually given a special assignment to research Methos, the legendary oldest living man on Earth.
Actually, I am Methos, but ssshhh, don't tell anyone. A lot of people out there would love to take the head of the world's oldest man, so I try to keep a low profile — I was in charge of finding myself, and I made sure it never happened.
But now, I'm in Los Angeles working for the other branch of the Watchers. These guys train and assist the Slayer. There used to be only one Slayer, but now thanks to Buffy Summers and Willow Rosenberg there are dozens of them. I've been sent to LA to find a few of the girls who are without guidance like Faith Lehane. That girl has a serious reputation for getting into trouble. I think some of my friends from the old days would have liked her - Kronosfor one.
I'm going to open a book store/coffee place there - where you can buy strange and unusual books as well as the latest best sellers - it'll serve as a home base for the girls too. It'll also give me some place safe to hide out. I'm going to look for an old church to convert, so it's holy ground. I don't like playing the game. But just remember, just because I don't like to fight doesn't mean I can't.
The Real Me - Methos -
Methos is the mythical "Oldest of the Immortals." He is at least 5000 years old, the approximate date he took his first head, but claims to remember nothing before that - including his place and date of birth.
He has been keeping a journal almost since writing began (approximately 3300 BC). He learned how to write in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Hyksos, cuneiform, Phoenician, and Ancient Greek writing systems. He claims to have met Helen of Troy, Socrates, Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra. He knew the English poets Byron and Percy Shelley, and Mary Shelley, and rode with Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. In his first meeting with the Highlander Duncan MacLeod, he said not many people can claim to have been on the same stage (either metaphorical or not) as both Julius Caesar and The Rolling Stones.
Dark Past - (you try being 5000 years old without having a black period)
Duncan MacLeod learned that the man he trusted had a horrible secret; Methos had a dark past — he was actually a member of The Four Horsemen, who may have inspired the biblical Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. When a former slave of his comes to Seacouver, Methos is forced to face his dark past. It gets worse when Kronos arrives to find his lost brother. Methos decided to flee, but Duncan caught him leaving, and Methos made this confession to the boy scout:
"I killed. But I didn't just kill fifty, I didn't kill a hundred. I killed a thousand. I killed TEN thousand! And I was good at it. And it wasn't for vengeance, it wasn't for greed. It was because...I liked it. Cassandra was nothing. Her village was nothing. Do you know who I was? I was Death. Death — Death on a horse. When mothers warned their children that the monster would get them, that monster was me. I was the nightmare that kept them awake at night. Is that what you want to hear?! The answer is yes. Oh, yes."
In the end, Methos joined Duncan MacLeod to destroy The Four Horsemen. The two defeated the Horsemen together, resulting in a powerful "Double Quickening". Duncan first killed Caspian and later slew Kronos, while Methos had to kill Silas, the only member of the Horsemen that he really liked. But it was too late to repair the friendship between himself and Duncan.
Watchers - Highlander Style -
The Watchers are a secret society that observes the lives of the Immortals without revealing themselves. Each Immortal is assigned a Watcher whose sole job is to monitor and record their activities. The network of Watchers generally keeps careful tabs on their subjects and even the casual movements of the Immortals are tracked. Most Immortals are unaware of the Watchers. The organization was created by Ammaletu the Akkadian after he saw Gilgamesh coming back to life. In older ages all Watchers wore a medallion of the symbol of their organization. More recently, every Watcher has the symbol tattooed on their inner wrist. This symbol can be seen in my ICONS.
Watchers - Buffy Style -
Watchers are devoted to tracking and combating malevolent supernatural entities (and particularly vampires), primarily by locating individuals with the talents required to fight such beings and win. More specifically, Watchers are assigned to Slayers, girls that are part of a succession of mythically powered individuals who are destined to face said foes. Upon a Slayer's demise, her powers are transferred unto a new girl, who is then assigned a Watcher herself. The Watchers' Council trains new Watchers in a private school of some kind.
A standard Watcher has at least some proficiency in the use of magic. They are students of demonology and as such have a wide knowledge of various incarnations of evil, but their expertise is usually the vampire. Watchers are typically well versed in hand-to-hand combat techniques, though they generally confine themselves to training Slayers or supporting them in battle, as their relative strength limits their effectiveness in directly engaging vampires. I sadly have no magic skill, but excellent hand-to-hand combat ability. (It helps to have 5000 years of practice,no?)
IMMORTALS - a link because it's too bloody long to paste in here
Knowledge Base - Methos is ancient, but he is only going to be well-versed in the Highlander and Buffyverse canons. He'll know that there is more than one type of vampire, but he has no IC knowledge about them...
He'd like to keep it that way too. Immortal blood is tasty. He'd be a permanent Capris Sun if some tick ever captured him. You could feed off of him forever, and he'd never die.
Adams fear - Discovery, the last thing he wants in the world is for anyone to know that he is #1 Immortal, #2 Methos. The Immortals are as secretive as the Underworld Vampires without the nice covens for protection. They are solitary creatures who all hunt each other.
Does he have weakness? - He can die at least temporarily by any means that can kill a human. It is only permanent if you cut off his head. But if he dies publicly, he will have to give up his life and move on.
What *does* happen if a vampire were to drink his blood? And where does all that blood come from? - No one knows where the Immortals come from, not even they do. His blood is very rich, think of a fine wine that has aged for all those centuries. Any vampire would love to keep him as a pet. I have an idea for a flashback where he was held by one for quite some time.
Who Watches him? Since no one knows that he is an Immortal in the Watcher Council (at least as far as he knows) he doesn't have a watcher. But wouldn't it be funny if he was wrong, and they were watching him?
